Dynamic challenge on the organ bench

On 10 March 2023, there was an international conference in Copenhagen (Frederiksberg), organised by Orgelklubben and The Royal Danish Academy of Music. Organ teachers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Iceland were present to share knowledge and gain inspiration. One of the inspiring assignments by Katrine Immerkjaer Kristiansen was this funny challenge on the organ bench. Eight organists were each given a strip with two bars of a well-known church song on it.

  • The first task was to determine the order of the bars and discover which song it was.
  • The next task was for each organist to play his or her two bars in succession, in such a way that the melody became a whole and could be sung along with it.
  • When that went successful, the assignment was extended: play the same two bars, but now harmonised.

A great idea to challenge a group of young organ students with!
